What Am I Reading?

Follow along with Pastor Matt as he talks about what he is currently reading…

I’ve Got a Weird, Uneasy Feeling. I Know It Won’t Let Me Down.

Sometimes you read a passage of Scripture and think to yourself, "what in the world just happened?" Or, if we are being honest, "Why is that even in the Bible?" Or, if we are being really honest, "I feel like I just wasted 10 minutes of my life." Maybe it's never...

Reading While Black

An objective for The Church at West Franklin in 2021 (and beyond) is for our church to embrace, love, learn from, and do life with those who have a different skin color. A tiny way we are moving in this direction is by having the staff ministry team read Esau...

On a Campaign: A Letter to West Franklin

West Franklin Family, I don't know where it came from, but it needs to go away. . . fast. I know it didn't come from the Bible, though it sounds very biblical. I know it hasn't actually helped anyone, though it feels helpful. I know I have heard it from many pastors...

There Are No Brake Pedals on the Passenger Side: Discipleship and Teen Driving

I am eight months into teaching a fifteen-year-old how to drive. That’s right. In four months, yours truly will have a third driver in the house. This, of course, assumes I haven’t killed him, or prevented him from taking his driver’s test until he's 38. To say I have...

The Irony of Masks: A Letter to West Franklin

West Franklin Family, “Isn't it ironic . . . don’t you think?” Pardon the Alanis Morissette reference, but her lyrics keep ringing in my head. I mean, there are worse songs you could have playing in your head right now. Consider, “It’s a Small World” from Disney. You...

Making Sense of It All

"When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, 'Why did the LORD bring defeat on us today before the Philistines?'" (1 Samuel 4:3) Have you ever noticed how you can read the Bible, see the big picture, be grateful for God's plan(s), and then go on...

Shut Your Mouth and Open It

I am not sure about you, but I have a very difficult time knowing when to shut my mouth and when to open it. I am really good at keeping it open when it needs to be shut and/or keeping it shut when I need to open it. But having a healthy balance? I need help....

2020/2021: An End of Year/Beginning of Year Letter to West Franklin

West Franklin Family, The phrase "Hindsight is 2020" means when we look back on a situation or circumstance, we can see clearly how we would have handled it differently. Looking back on things, in other words, we have "2020 Vision." It means we, hopefully, learned...

Top Ten Books of 2020

2020 has been a rough year. But it did allow for more reading time. And, man aren't you glad there is an abundance of remarkable books out there to be read! Here are my favorites from this year, in no particular order. . . Open: An Autobiography by Andre Agassi I...

Last Saturday of 2020. . . Bye Bye: A Letter to West Franklin

West Franklin Family, I had a nice long letter ready to send out to you this morning. . . but the internet and cell service is down at my house. . . due to a bomb that went off in downtown Nashville . . . on Christmas Day 2020. I couldn't send the letter because,...
